Short answer
Files from mail or the internet open in Protected View, and files interrupted while saving keep a damaged ending. Office has a built in repair mode for both. The quickest thing to try first: unblock the file — Right click the file, Properties, and if an Unblock box appears near the bottom, tick it and press OK. Blocked downloads can look broken. Work through these in order

Unblock the file
Right click the file, Properties, and if an Unblock box appears near the bottom, tick it and press OK. Blocked downloads can look broken.

Use Open and Repair
In Word or Excel choose File, Open, Browse, click the file once, then click the small arrow beside the Open button and pick Open and Repair. This is Microsoft's official recovery route.

Recover the text only
In the same Open dialog set the file type list to Recover Text from Any File. Formatting is lost but your words come back.

Look for autosaved versions
File, Info, Manage Document, Recover Unsaved Documents. Also right click the file on OneDrive online and choose Version history.

Open it in a different app
Upload the file to Word for the web at office.com or open it in Google Docs. Their converters often read files the desktop app rejects.
If none of that worked
If the file lived on a USB stick that was pulled out mid save, stop using that stick and copy everything off it now, as more files will follow.
