An Office file refuses to open
Excel or Word says the file is corrupt or cannot be opened. Can I still get my work back?

Short answer
Office blocks files that came from the internet, and files copied while still being written or saved on a failing USB stick can have a damaged final block. The quickest thing to try first: unblock the file — Right click the file, Properties, and tick Unblock at the bottom of the General tab. This fixes most files downloaded or received by email. Most people are done in about 10 minutes.

Work through these in order

Unblock the file
Right click the file, Properties, and tick Unblock at the bottom of the General tab. This fixes most files downloaded or received by email.

Turn off Protected View for that open
File, Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Settings, Protected View. Untick the option matching where the file came from, open the file, then turn it back on.

Use Open and Repair
In Excel or Word choose File, Open, Browse, click the file once, then click the small arrow on the Open button and pick Open and Repair.

Recover a previous version
Right click the file, Properties, Previous Versions. If the file lives in OneDrive, open it on the web and use Version history to roll back.
If none of that worked
If nothing opens it, upload the file to Office on the web. The online engine is more forgiving than the desktop app and often renders a file the installed version rejects.
