How do I fix a laptop that only uses the integrated graphics instead of the dedicated GPU?

    Right click the desktop, open NVIDIA Control Panel, Manage 3D settings, and set Preferred graphics processor to High-performance NVIDIA processor. For AMD, open AMD Software, Gaming, and set the Graphics Profile to Gaming for that title. Belt and braces, but it catches launchers that start the real game as a separate process.

    Plug the charger in and set the power plan

    Many laptops will not use the dedicated card on battery at all. Connect the charger, then open Settings, System, Power and battery and set the Power mode to Best performance. Check the maker's own app too, since Armoury Crate, Lenovo Vantage and Omen Gaming Hub each have their own performance switch that trumps the Windows one.

    Check for a graphics mode in the maker's app or BIOS

    Many gaming laptops offer Discrete, Hybrid and Ultimate or MUX switch options. Setting it to Discrete or Ultimate wires the screen straight to the dedicated card and gives a real jump in frame rate. It needs a restart and it costs battery life, so switch back to Hybrid for travel.

    Update both drivers, not just one

    Install the current driver for the dedicated card from NVIDIA or AMD and the Intel or AMD integrated graphics driver from the laptop maker's page. A mismatch between the two is a common reason the handover fails. Use the clean installation option.

    Confirm it is actually being used

    Open Task Manager, the Performance tab, and click GPU 1 while the game runs, or press Alt and Z in GeForce Experience and turn on the performance overlay. If usage climbs on the dedicated card, it is working. Judge by this rather than by how the game feels.

    Plug external monitors into the right socket

    On most gaming laptops the HDMI port is wired to the dedicated card and USB-C to the built-in one, or the other way round. If a monitor is forcing everything onto the weak chip, try the other socket. The maker's manual has a diagram showing which is which.

If none of that worked

If the dedicated card does not appear in Device Manager at all, restart into the BIOS and check it has not been disabled, then look under Display adapters for a yellow warning triangle. A card that shows a code 43 there needs a clean driver reinstall before anything else will work.
