Do a clean reinstall of the graphics driver
Download the current driver straight from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel for your exact model. Do not use Windows Update for this. Run the installer and pick Custom, then tick Perform a clean installation. If it crashes again, download Display Driver Uninstaller, restart into Safe Mode, remove the driver with it, then install the fresh one. A leftover half of an older driver causes more black screens than anything else.

Always game with the charger plugged in
On battery, most laptops cap the graphics card and some cannot supply the current a game demands, so the machine blacks out. Use the charger that came with it, at the wattage printed on the brick. A weaker USB-C charger from a phone or a dock will not hold up under a game even though it charges fine at the desktop.

Watch the temperatures while you play
Install HWiNFO64 and open the sensors window on a second screen or check it right after a crash. If the graphics card passes about 87 degrees or the processor sits at 100 with the clock speed dropping, it is heat. Raise the back of the laptop on a book so air can reach the underside vents, blow the dust out of the exhaust grilles with a can of air, and set the maker's tuning app to Performance so the fans spin sooner.

Undo any overclock, including the factory one
Open MSI Afterburner and pull the Core Clock slider down by 100 MHz, then test. If the crashes stop, you have found it. Also open the maker's own app, for example Armoury Crate, Legion Toolkit or Omen Gaming Hub, and switch any Turbo or overclock profile back to Balanced or Standard.

Stop Windows from cutting the card off
Open Control Panel, Power Options, Change plan settings, Change advanced power settings, expand PCI Express, Link State Power Management and set it to Off on both battery and plugged in. Under Processor power management set the minimum state to 5 percent. Aggressive power saving is a common cause of a card going dark under sudden load.

Test the memory if it happens in more than one game
Press Windows and R, type mdsched.exe and let it run at the next restart. Faulty memory shows up first under heavy load, which is why gaming triggers it while browsing never does. If it reports errors, run with one stick at a time to find the bad one.
If none of that worked
If it survives a game with the graphics card underclocked but crashes at stock speed and temperatures are fine, the card or its power delivery is failing and the machine needs a warranty claim or a workshop. Keep the Event Viewer entry to hand, because it is the evidence a repair centre will ask for.
