Measure the actual speed
Run a speed test on the laptop and on your phone standing in the same spot. Compare the numbers before changing anything.

Find hidden downloads
Open Task Manager, click the Network column, and look for updates, cloud sync or game launchers using the connection in the background.

Pause updates while you work
In Settings, Windows Update, pause updates for a week if a large download is choking your connection.

Get closer to the router
Signal strength drops sharply through walls. Two bars instead of four can easily halve your speed.

Limit background app data
Mark your connection as metered under Wi-Fi properties. Windows then holds back big background transfers.
